Ice 2007 was a lot of fun and a huge success. Over 440 people from across Canada and around the world came to the Carlu for three days of celebrating the interactive digital media industry. Roughly 120 speakers, 34 panels and three receptions, made the second installment of our annual conference a top-notch networking and learning opportunity

"URL the Series" wins $10,000 Grand Prize at TELUS Multiscreen Challenge

TELUS Multiscreen Challenge

Toronto, March 22, 2007 - URL the Series, a pitch by Jarrett  Sherman of Miracle Pictures / Kid-A-Ma-Scope won top honour Thursday afternoon at the TELUS Multiscreen Challenge at ICE 2007. One of seven finalists, Sherman wowed the jury with a finely tuned presentation for his proposed TV series and avatar-based, 3-D, community environment.

The pitch jury was moderated by Jonathan Freedman, Manager of Business Development for TELUS TV and included a star line-up of interactive and tv media executives including:

Chickadvisor.com takes Grand Prize at CHUM U-Pitch at ICE 2007

CHUM U-Pitch TORONTO, March 21, 2007 - Ian Kelso, Executive Producer of ICE 2007 announced the winners who shared a total of $10,000 in prizes in the innovative and fast-paced CHUM U-PITCH capping off the opening day of the agenda-packed Interactive Content Exchange on Wednesday March 21st at Toronto's Carlu Event Theatre.

The event challenged media innovators to pitch their original ideas for new user-generated content ventures in Fashion, Music or News and Information.

Ali de Bold of Chickadvisor.com won $5,000 in production funds for first prize for the project called, "Where'd You Get That?".

Honours for second prize(and $3,000) went to Gabe Sawhney for Torontopia and David Hamilton of Scotland's Digital Goldfish received the 3rd prize of $2000 for his concept called Reach For The Starz

Ontario companies win big in Telefilm Great Canadian Video Game Competition

Two of the four second round finalists in the Telefilm "Great Canadian Video Game Competition"  based in Ontario.

Toronto, March 21, 2007 - Wayne Clarkson, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada, announced Wednesday evening that London-based Big Blue Bubble (for console game "Hobby Shop") and St. Catharines-based Cerebral Vortex Games (for PC / Mobile / Xbox Live Arcade game "Ambush! Trivia) are each chosen to proceed to the final round of the Great Canadian Video Game Competition and will be awarded up to $250,000 in financing to create  working prototypes of their games. The overall winner will be selected from the four second round finalists in fall of this year tol receive up to $500,000 in additional funding.

TORONTO, MARCH 21, 2007 - After almost six years as the New Media Business Alliance, the Ontario-based trade association unveiled its new identity and officially announced its name change to  Interactive Ontario at the Gala reception for ICE 2007 at the Carlu in Toronto. The new logo was designed by Louis Fishauf of Louis Fishauf Design

Ontario Minister of Culture to open ICE 2007 followed by a performance by Alchemy Society - 6pm Tuesday March 20th at the Carlu

Ontario Minister of Culture the Honourable Caroline Di Cocco will launch ICE 2007 with a welcome address at ICE Breaker, a special reception at 6pm, Tuesday March 20th 2007 in the Sky Room at the Carlu. The Ministry of Culture is a major supporter of ICE through its Partnerships Fund with contribution to a project managed by the New Media Business Alliance in cooperation with FilmOntario.

The reception will later feature a performance by Toronto artists Alchemy Society. Their music has been described as "live improvised organic breakbeat nujazz".

ICE Breaker will also feature the ICE Early Bird draw for a Nintendo Wii and DS package worth over $500.

ICE Breaker takes place from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Tuesday March 20th

Juno Award winner Richard Underhill will lead the Richard Underhill Quartet with a special feature performance by vocalist Sophia Perlman at the ICE 2007 Gala.

Telefilm Canada to award up to $1,000,000 in financing, reveal Round Two winners of Great Canadian Video Game Competition

Wayne Clarkson, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada will kick off the evening with a special announcement to reveal the four Round Two winners of the Great Canadian Video Game Competition (GCVGC). Each of the final four teams will receive up to $250,000 in financing toward the creation of a playable prototype of their game. The 10 Round One winners each made in-person pitch presentations to the GCVGC jury at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this month.

Richard Underhill was awarded the 2003 Juno Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year for Tales from the Blue Lounge, and nominated for a 2007 Juno Award in the same category for Moment in Time.

Underhill was a founding member of the Shuffle Demons and has performed and recorded with The Neville Brothers/Meters, Han Bennink, Julius Hemphil, Dr. John, Kathleen Edwards, Taj Mahal, Maria Muldar, Rob McConnell, Molly Johnson, Blue Rodeo, Andy Stochansky, Hawksley Workman, The Sadies, Luke Doucet, Bobby Wiseman, Soul Rebels, the Mighty PoPo, Paul Cram, Kevin Breit, the Hemispheres Orchestra, and NOMA.

Sophia Perlman is both a local and a vocal treasure. She has performed with a range of ensembles including: The Canadian Opera Company, The Toronto All-Star Big Band, The Top Brass Orchestra and The Swing Gang. In addition to her Canadian performances, Sophia has also charmed audiences Germany, India and the United States.

The team is responsible for all life-cycle phases, including product strategy, development, launch, and in-market management. It also drives product revenue and P+L targets, defines core market segments, and leads product-marketing responsibilities for the offer. Andrew Ayre

Andrew Ayre co-founded and currently serves as Executive Director of Foundation 9 Entertainment, with 11 studios and 750 employees, the largest independent video game developer in North America. Andrew has played a key role in M&A and corporate development for Foundation 9 and is also responsible for a number of key relationships and strategic projects. His previous roles included responsibility for business development across the entire company. He also co-founded and served as President of Backbone Entertainment. In 1992, he co-founded Digital Eclipse, where he served as President from January 1995 until it's merger with Backbone Entertainment in 2003. Andrew grew up in Newfoundland and has a B.A. degree in Government from Harvard University.

Tom Frencel

Tom Frencel is the President of Capybara Games Inc. (www.capybaragames.com), a mobile game developer based in Toronto, Ontario. As head of the company, Tom has been responsible for guiding the fast growth of Capybara and positioning it as a provider of premium mobile games with a growing international reputation for quality. Overseeing the development of over fourteen projects in just 3 years has given Tom a unique perspective on a burgeoning industry.

Tom has been involved on both AAA licensed games, including Cars for Disney/Pixar, Happy Feet for Warner Brothers, and successful original IP titles, including Pillow Fight with I-play and Super Shove It! with Starwave.

Earlier in his career, Tom established a strong technical background through his work at EMC and Nortel Networks. He holds a BSc. in Computer Science and Economics from the University of Toronto.

Jennifer Ouano

Award-winning producer, director and new media strategist in the television, web, mobile, radio and film industries for over 15 years, Jennifer is nuts about great ideas, great thinking, great design, great storytelling and great style – in no particular order. One of her recent accomplishments was ZeD, CBC TV's flagship convergence program and a pioneer in social networking and user-generated content. Jennifer was one of the original architects of the program, as well as senior producer and head of convergence, interactive and business development.

Kevin Bracken

Kevin Bracken is originally from Long Island, New York and moved to Toronto, Canada in September of 2004 to study political science at the University of Toronto. Involved in such projects as The TRIP! Project and the Toronto Public Space Committee, Kevin has clearly defined his role as devoted to the fun and freedom of the public.

He delights in late-night techno dance parties, blowing large volumes of bubbles with brightly-colored machines, website design and technology, public infrastructure and transit, tall buildings, big cities, boardwalks, jungle music, the earth, beauty, and adventures of all kinds.

Kevin DeWalt

Kevin DeWalt is CEO of Canadian-based Minds Eye Entertainment, which he founded in 1986. Minds Eye is an internationally-recognized, vertically-integrated organization which includes subsidiaries in new media and distribution. Kevin has produced over 40 film, television and web-based projects that have been sold to over 200 territories around the world. His recent production, Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story, was recently (Jan. 2007) purchased by The Hallmark Channel and will be broadcast in 146 territories in 18 languages. His current production, The Englishman's Boy, a four-hour TV event mini-series starring Bob Hoskins and Nick Campbell, will air on CBC Television in September 2007 and be released internationally as both a mini-series and feature film. Kevin is a board member of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA). He is currently President of the International Quorum of Film and Television Producers (IQ). Kevin is married with three teenagers aged 16, 14 and 12 and makes his home in Regina, Canada.

Matt came to Tira from Brightspark Ventures LP, where he was Director of New Ventures. Nick Patsiopoulos

Nick is responsible for building and expanding Yahoo!'s Mobile and Communities portfolios in Canada to help fulfill Yahoo!'s vision of connecting people to their passions, their communities and the world's knowledge.

Prior to joining Yahoo! Nick was a Senior Associate Director in Bell Mobility's Services Development group. In that role he launched North America's first mobile phone-based GPS mapping service and Canada's first consumer voice portal, as well as mobile search and personal information management products.

When not immersed in the worlds of mobile and community (and where they intersect), Nick enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking and hiking in places that mobile signals can't reach.

Originally from Charlottetown, PEI, Amber MacArthur joined "CityNews" and CP24 as its New Media Specialist, reporting on new media and interactive trends.

Most recently, Amber worked for G4techTV, a digital television channel entirely devoted to technology. There she co-hosted "Call For Help," a technology help program and "Torrent," an Internet culture show featuring web videos from around the world, as well as "Gadgets and Gizmos," where she reviewed the newest gadgets." She also developed "commandN," a popular video podcast that covers online and offline technology trends.

Amber has honed her media and technology skills in San Francisco and Boston as Director of Web Marketing at HigherMarkets, where she managed corporate branding initiatives, software usability and online course development. As Writer and Branding Strategist at web design firm Razorfish San Francisco, she developed online content and usability strategies, in addition to judging The Webby Awards 2000, where she analyzed and rated more than 100 websites. She also led a team in Toronto to develop a web lifestyle portal for Microsoft Canada called Microsoft Home Magazine and co-founded a small design firm called Arktyp.

Amber is actively involved in Women in Technology International (WITI) and most recently hosted their 10th Anniversary Gala in San Jose, California, where WITI honoured the first female programmer of the world's first computer called the ENIAC.
David Hamilton

Based in Dundee, Scotland. Digital Goldfish create mobile content with the female market in mind. After graduating with a University of Abertay Dundee’s highly rated computing games degree, David then went on to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship where he then with another graduate set up the business in 2005.

At only 23 year old David has gained valuable experience in the mobile sector after their successful release of their first game title: Babygrow; A virtual baby in the palm of the hand. With new products set for release this is an exciting time for Digital Goldfish.

Thanks to her PR work, Didi has taken Grrlgamer's reviews to official websites, the cover of a game and has also been featured on Nintendo Power, spreading the word that girls do play games, and not just of the "pink kind".
